What the tool does
A 120 mm degree wheel made from 0.8 mm polystyrene with a 6 mm bore and a 360 degree graduation. It is fitted onto the crankshaft stub; a wire pointer on the casing shows the crank angle. Supplied with instructions.
When you need it
When the ignition is to be set in degrees before TDC instead of millimetres, or when you want to measure a cylinder's port timing (exhaust, transfer, inlet).

How to use it
Determine top dead centre exactly (dial gauge or piston stop), align the degree wheel on the crankshaft so the pointer stands at 0.
Fix a pointer made from roughly 2 mm wire to the casing or cylinder.
Turn the crankshaft in its running direction and read off the angle at which the contact breaker opens (test lamp) or the piston clears a port edge.
Compare the value with the manufacturer's specification, adjust the ignition base plate, repeat the measurement.
Ignition timing given in millimetres can only be roughly determined with a dial gauge in the plug hole, and is inaccurate where the plug sits at an angle. Port timing cannot be measured at all without a degree wheel.
The wheel has a 6 mm bore. For a larger shaft stub, turn a centring sleeve or clamp the wheel with a suitable screw and two washers. It must not slip while turning.
