What the tool does

A blue anodised aluminium ring with a 79.8 mm inner diameter. It is fitted onto the fully assembled base plate in place of the flywheel and gives the coils exactly the radius the flywheel will later have.

When you need it

After replacing the ignition coil or lighting coil on a Bosch ignition system, when the coils need to be realigned and fastened.

How to use it

  1. Loosely pre-assemble the base plate with the ignition coil and lighting coil.

  2. Fit the ring onto the base plate, press the coils outward against the ring and tighten them.

  3. Remove the ring, fit the flywheel.

  4. Measure the air gap between armature and pole shoe at several points; depending on the manufacturer, at least 0.25 to 0.35 mm.

Without this tool

Coils aligned by eye have an uneven air gap. The result is a weak ignition spark or a flywheel that rubs at one point.

Workshop tip

Supplied without an ignition system. The ring only fits Bosch base plates with a 79.8 mm flywheel inner diameter; do not use it with Ducati or Motoplat systems.
