What the tool does
The classic tubular spark plug spanner with a 21 mm across flats and a handle, as found in many toolkits. For the common 14 mm plugs with a 21 mm hexagon (e.g. Bosch W series, NGK B series).
When you need it
Changing a plug, checking the plug's condition, relieving pressure on the engine before pulling the flywheel. Belongs in the toolkit.
How to use it
Pull off the plug cap, remove dirt from around the plug.
Fit the spanner square onto the plug, loosen it and unscrew it.
Screw the new plug in by hand until it seats, then tighten it with the spanner by only about a quarter to half a turn (new sealing washer).
With an open ended spanner you slip on the hexagon and damage the insulator. Plugs done up too tight strip the thread out of the aluminium head.
Many modern plugs have a 16 mm hexagon. Check which plug is fitted to the engine before buying.
